Ownership impact on production (Disney):

  • High budget - more money goes into editing, CGI and other effects.
  • Wide audience reach.
  • Brand loyalty - everyone will watch it - Disney have a very good reputation.
  • More focused target audience (about 3-16).
  • More time spent on production.
  • However can become boring and competitive.

2016 Jungle Book facts:
  • Director - Jon Favreau
  • £301 UK revenue
  • $177m budget
  • Synergy - original soundtrack, theme parks
  • Most of production was studio based
  • Used puppets on set for animals
  • Raytracing - how light interacts with an object
  • motion resolution.

1967 Jungle Book:
  • Walt Disney died during production
  • first version of the script was too dark, Disney wanted a more family friendly version
  • real orchestra used for songs.

Synergy - the interaction of two or more forces working together creates a larger effect than the individual forces. E.g. merchandise to go with a film, a soundtrack e.g. Kendrick Lamar - Black Panther.

Process of making a film:

Pre-production:
Idea, commissioning, scriptwriting, casting.

Production:
Filming, editing.

Post-production:
Marketing e.g. trailers, posters, social media, advertising.
Distribution

4 stages of film:
Production - develop, pre-production, production, post-production.
Distribution - how to get the film to an audience.
Marketing - promoting the film - trailers, press, posters, talk shows.
Exhibition (how producers show film) and exchange (what you use to watch it - how audiences watch it.

Ownership types:

Horizontal integration - when the production company expands into other areas of one industry. It can acquire or merge with other companies that do the same thing.

Vertical integration - when the production company has ownership of the means of production, distribution and exhibition of the film by the same company as they receive all the profit.

Film Industry research






     1.    All of the top 20 grossing films of 2018 are from the big six.
2.    Disney have had the greatest financial success.
3.    The main genre of film that dominates is action and Sci-Fi.
4.    There are 4 sequels on the list, and the majority are blockbusters in well known franchises.
5.    4 of the films on the list are blockbusters aimed at a younger audience.
6.    Many of the films on the list do have a 3D version.
7.    The main genre which seems to be missing is comedies. A lot of these films do have comedy aspects, but none of them are solely comedy films.
8.    The target audience for most of the films is 12 or older.

UK release schedule:
There aren’t many blockbusters released in the UK in the first few months. Some of the blockbusters that are coming out include; Glass, the Lego movie 2, Happy Death day 2U, Captain Marvel. Most other blockbusters come out closer to Easter and summer due to school holidays.
